Below €50,000 you are not entering a compromise, you are entering the used market. This bracket holds the bulk of the classic four-stroke entry-level types: solidly built aircraft with a Rotax 912 UL, mostly built in the 1990s and 2000s, often club-owned or from one long-term first owner.
Buying here almost always means buying an aircraft with a history. That is not a drawback as long as the history is documented. Three things matter in this class: the remaining engine time, the condition of the airframe and fabric, and the status of the rescue system. An aircraft at €35,000 with an overhaul due is more expensive than one at €48,000 with a freshly overhauled engine — that calculation is the actual core of buying used.
What you get in this bracket
Typical for the sub-€50,000 bracket are mixed-construction high-wing aircraft with an 80 hp Rotax, classic analogue instruments, and radio and transponder at the level of their original build year. Common types are earlier Comco Ikarus C42s, early-generation B&F FK9s and a range of Czech and Polish designs. Touring types with retractable gear, constant-speed propellers and glass cockpits are rare here — those start well above this level. In exchange, aircraft in this class are forgiving, easy to maintain and entirely adequate for training and cross-country flying in Germany.
Checklist before the viewing
Before you travel, ask for four documents: the engine logbook with hours and the date of the last service, the data sheet and weighing report (useful load on older types is often lower than hoped), proof of the last annual inspection and the rescue system paperwork with packing date and rocket service life. A missing document is not a deal breaker but it is a price argument. On site, the fabric covering, landing gear attachments and propeller leading edges are the places most likely to hide expensive surprises.
Budgeting realistically for running costs
In this class the purchase price is rarely the biggest item over the ownership period. Budget for hangarage, insurance, the annual inspection, reserves for the engine overhaul and repacking the rescue system. Working through these items in advance avoids the classic disappointment in the second year of ownership. For the purchase price itself, our financing calculator is worth a look — in this bracket a short loan term is often cheaper than waiting for the perfect offer.
