About the P92 Echo
The Tecnam P92 Echo is the aircraft with which the Italian manufacturer Tecnam conquered the European ultralight market in the 1990s. The P92 prototype first flew in 1993 – English-language sources give 14 March 1993, while some German sources state 1992 – and the type-certified P92-J followed in November 1995. English Wikipedia quotes more than 2,500 aircraft of the whole P92 family built by 2018; no reliable production figure exists for the Echo alone. The Echo was built in a long succession of versions, and the used market is dominated by the trade names Echo, Echo Classic, Echo de Luxe and Echo Light, which the German DULV covers in a single data sheet (802/10).
Structurally the Echo is a strut-braced high-wing all-metal design: light alloy over a steel-tube forward fuselage, cruciform tail, fixed nosewheel gear and two side-by-side seats. DULV data sheet 802/10 lists 9.30 m span, 13.02 m² wing area and 6.40 m length for the Classic/Deluxe/Light series, rising to 9.40 m span with the Deluxe winglets and 6.50 m length with the Deluxe cowling; the factory brochure states 9.4 m. The type-certified P92-J differs with 9.6 m span and 13.2 m² (EASA.A.412) – so when evaluating a specific aircraft, always read the data sheet and weighing report that come with it. Engine options are the 80 hp Rotax 912 UL and the 100 hp Rotax 912 ULS, with electrically operated flaps to 35° and tanks of 2 × 35 l or 2 × 45 l, or a single 45 l tank on the Light version.
In the air the Echo is undramatic: minimum speed of 65 km/h per the data sheet, best climb of 3.9 m/s with the 80 hp engine at maximum weight, VNE 241 km/h. Tecnam quotes 205 km/h cruise at 75 % power for the 100 hp version and a maximum range of 750 km at 65 % power explicitly without reserve, and 190 km/h with 720 km for the 80 hp version. After deducting the usual reserve, a realistic planning leg is roughly 550 to 600 km. A noise figure of 59.9 dB(A) keeps the Echo acceptable even at noise-sensitive airfields.
Strengths: a rugged metal airframe instead of ageing fabric, the excellent visibility of a high wing, very forgiving slow-flight behaviour, worldwide parts supply from a manufacturer still in business, and prices at the lower end of the ultralight market. Weaknesses: in the 450/472.5 kg class, a data-sheet empty weight of 297 kg and 20 kg baggage allowance leave little margin for two heavy occupants and full tanks; cruise speed is clearly below that of modern composite ultralights; older 80 hp examples feel sluggish on cross-country legs into a headwind; and cabin width and interior noise reflect 1990s standards.
The P92 Echo suits pilots who want an affordable, uncomplicated and maintenance-friendly ultralight for circuits, training and shorter trips, valuing durability and running costs over outright speed. Across all Tecnam types, listings on ul-flugzeugmarkt.de range from about €18,000 to €180,000, with model years from the 1990s into the 2020s – and the Echo is the entry point into the brand.
