About the GX
The Remos GX grew directly out of the G-3/600: with issue 1 of DAeC type data sheet 61109.3, dated 28 May 2008, the series designation changed from "Gemini Remos G-3/600" to "Remos GX" – together with an entirely new all-carbon wing, a revised span, a single lift strut without auxiliary strut and a glass/carbon fuselage. The GX was shown in the USA at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in summer 2008; a first-flight date appears only in secondary sources without references, so it is left open here. The GXNXT (GXnXES in the USA) followed from 2011, and the GXiS with the fuel-injected Rotax 912 iS Sport was presented in 2016 and approved in April 2017. Around 450 aircraft of the G-3 and GX families had been built by June 2016. Stemme AG acquired REMOS AG in April 2017; new GX are not currently offered, and type support and spares run through Stemme Production GmbH in Pasewalk.
The GX is an all-composite airframe in carbon, glass and aramid fibre: strut-braced shoulder-wing layout, cruciform tail, tricycle gear with steerable nosewheel, hydraulic disc brakes, infinitely adjustable slotted flaps from 0° to 40° and electric elevator trim. The fuselage tank holds 68 litres per the type data sheet, or 84 litres as an equipment option – both versions are out there on the used market, so check tank capacity on the individual aircraft. In German ultralight operation the GX was approved at 472.5 kg with a rescue system installed; since September 2020 the DAeC has cleared the GX and GXiS for 600 kg takeoff weight. Converting older airframes may require new landing gear and new harnesses, and only the BRS rescue systems covered the higher mass. In the USA the GX was sold from the outset as an S-LSA at 600 kg (1,320 lb).
Performance depends heavily on the propeller: the flight manual quotes maximum speeds of 200 to 205 km/h with 81 hp and 215 to 235 km/h with 100 hp, while cruise runs from roughly 149 to 209 km/h TAS depending on rpm (100 hp, 3,000 ft). Best climb is 800 to 1,274 ft/min, take-off distance over a 15 m obstacle 120 to 190 m and landing distance 185 m with full flap – all of these apply at 472.5 kg takeoff weight per the flight manual. VNE is 249 km/h CAS at MSL and decreases with altitude (203 km/h at 15,000 ft), manoeuvring speed is 174 km/h and flaps-extended speed 130 km/h at full deflection. Stall speeds at 472.5 kg are 63 km/h with and 72 km/h without flaps; aircraft converted to 600 kg follow the higher figures of the applicable flight manual supplement – the US LSA data sheet lists 81 km/h clean and 70 to 78 km/h with flaps for the same airframe at 600 kg, with correspondingly longer take-off and landing distances. Service ceiling is 15,000 ft, load factors are +5.1/-2.5 g and the demonstrated crosswind component is 15 kt. With the Rotax 912 ULS/S the GX is approved for aerotowing (550 to 720 kg towed mass depending on propeller), and at 57.7 to 59.9 dB(A) it is notably quiet.
The GX's strengths are the good cruise-to-power ratio, high load factors, the 600 kg option, an unusually wide choice of approved fixed, ground-adjustable and in-flight variable propellers, the towing approval and low noise figures. The weaknesses: baggage allowance is tight – type data sheet 61109.3 issue 8 of 8 July 2015 (472.5 kg) permits 25 kg with the Rotax 912 S/ULS and just 10 kg with the 912/UL, and for aircraft converted to 600 kg the current data sheet and the weighing report are what count. There is no standardised empty weight either; only the individual aircraft's weighing report applies. Converting to 600 kg can involve landing gear, harnesses and, depending on installation, the rescue system, all of which costs money. The composite structure has a maximum permitted core temperature of 54 °C, which makes hangar space and sun exposure a real consideration. And new GX are not currently offered; type support now runs through Stemme Production GmbH in Pasewalk.
The GX suits pilots who want a quiet, quick composite high-wing with good visibility and genuine touring ability – as a club aircraft with a towing option, or as a tourer that stays legal two-up with baggage at 600 kg. Across all Remos types, listings on ul-flugzeugmarkt.de run from 39,000 to 110,000 euros; current figures for the GX are calculated live from active listings in the price box on this page. Anyone chasing maximum cruise speed will end up looking at low-wing designs such as the Flight Design CTLS or the JMB VL3 instead.
