About the VL3

The JMB Aircraft VL3 is one of the fastest ultralight aircraft in the world and a benchmark in the high-performance UL segment. Originally designed by Aveko in Brno, Czech Republic, production was taken over in 2010 by JMB Aircraft in Choceň, founded by Belgian brothers Jean-Marie and Jean-Baptiste Guisset. The current VL3 Evolution features an enlarged cockpit, optimized aerodynamics, and a modern canopy design.

The VL3 is a two-seat, low-wing monoplane built entirely from carbon fiber (CFRP) with a wingspan of just 8.56 m. Surface finish quality is mirror-smooth – pilot reviews regularly compare the build quality to that of a supercar. Engine options include the Rotax 912 iS Sport (115 hp), the Rotax 915 iS (141 hp), and the Rotax 916 iS (160 hp). An optional hydraulic retractable landing gear further boosts cruise speed. With the Rotax 915, cruise speeds of 270–280 km/h are achieved. The VL3 holds three world records in the two-seat ultralight category.

Those looking to buy a used JMB Aircraft VL3 should expect prices between EUR 80,000 and EUR 180,000. The used market in Germany is limited – rarely are more than a handful of VL3s listed simultaneously. A new VL3 Evolution with Rotax 916 iS and retractable gear ranges from EUR 250,000 to EUR 330,000.

Strengths: Outstanding cruise speed, excellent build quality, impressive climb rate (over 600 m/min with the Rotax 915), wide speed envelope from a stall speed of around 75 km/h to VNE of 300 km/h, and ballistic parachute system fitted as standard. Weaknesses: Despite improvements in the Evolution, the cockpit remains relatively cramped with limited storage. The standard 70-liter fuel capacity is marginal at high power settings. The aircraft's complexity demands experienced pilots – the VL3 is not a beginner's aircraft.

The VL3 is aimed at experienced pilots seeking a high-performance touring ultralight who value speed, range, and build quality. It competes more with aircraft like the Shark UL or Bristell than with conventional training ultralights.
